Shock waves were sent through the NFT gaming metaverse today with the announcement by Rumble Kong League (RKL) that they have signed an agreement with iLogos Game Studios to develop their crypto-based 3x3 basketball game. TLDR: traditional gaming companies have been put on notice, there’s a new sheriff in town and he believes in player owned assets.

There’s a new sheriff in town and he’s wearing a Mamba jersey :)

If you know anything about blockchain gaming then you know that it’s about building a business that empowers players to own and profit from the assets and the gameplay. In the web2 world this is akin to building a “platform based business model”. Easy examples here include Uber or AirBnB. In a platform business the goal is to facilitate commerce between related parties and then take a cut of the economic activity. And it’s obvious how disruptive those businesses were to the Taxi and Hotel markets.

RKL has a unique opportunity to become the platform for basketball fans around the world to interact, compete, and earn. There are a few keys to making this successful:

  • Providing multiple ways for participants to earn value from the platform
  • Ensuring that there is no “end” or finale to the game (continuous loop)
  • Making commerce easy and affordable
  • Making the UI and onboarding of new players frictionless

If RKL can execute on the above successfully then it stands to have a global juggernaut of a platform business the likes of which we have never seen.

Let me put this in simple terms by relating it to the current leader in blockchain gaming, Axie Infinity:

  • If you’re not familiar, Axie nails all of the elements of a successful platform based NFT gaming model I described above
  • The market cap of Sky Mavis (the org behind Axie) is already on par with companies like EA Sports and Activision and it was barely a blip on their radar a year ago.
  • Axie has absolutely skyrocketed in popularity in 2021. It has has generated $485 billion since July of this year and boasts 1.5 million daily active users.
Axie Infinity Sales Volume within the Game has Skyrocketed

Now let’s think about what that could mean for RKL:

  • You might not realize it but basketball is the 3rd most popular sport globally after Cricket and Soccer
  • Basketball has an est. 2.2 billion fans around the globe. Let that sink in
  • The NBA is worth an est. $50 billion dollars.. and it only plays in the US

It’s not far-fetched to see the RKL welcoming 0.01% of global basketball fans into its platform. If it just achieves that we’re talking about 220,000 players in the ecosystem. And there’s only 10,000 OG Kongs in existence. Things are going to heat up NBA Jam Style!

As the ecosystem develops I think we’ll see very exciting things like:

  • Professional YouTube and Twitch streamers covering the RKL game
  • DraftKings daily fantasy betting on RKL tournaments
  • RKL Club owners becoming like franchise owners

Yes there’s much to be done but if you’ve read my recent article about how the RKL is perfectly positioned with NFT trends and NBA players this fall then you know that all of the right ingredients are in place for something very special to happen.

We’re early, y’all. Saddle up and be a riddah.
